A First-Timer’s Guide to Cape Town, South Africa
Welcome to Cape Town!
If this is your first time visiting this stunning city, you’re in for a treat. Cape Town, nestled between Table Mountain and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, is a bucket-list destination with something for everyone. Whether you’re an adventurer, a foodie, a history buff, or just looking for a relaxing Cape Town vacation, this city has it all. Let’s dive into the top 10 things to do for a first-timer in Cape Town, with some practical travel tips along the way.
Cape Town attracts visitors with its stunning landscapes, from iconic Table Mountain to beautiful beaches like Camps Bay and Boulders Beach, where you can hang out with penguins. The city's rich history, including sites like Robben Island and the vibrant Bo-Kaap neighborhood, showcases its cultural diversity. Adventure seekers flock to the area for activities like hiking, paragliding, and shark cage diving, while foodies indulge in world-class cuisine and explore nearby wine regions like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. With a mild Mediterranean climate, a vibrant arts scene, and relative affordability, Cape Town offers an ideal mix of natural beauty, culture, and adventure for travelers.
A little bit about Cape Town
Cape Town is located on South Africa's southwestern coast, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the iconic Table Mountain, with its unique flat-topped shape dominating the skyline. Founded in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company as a supply station, Cape Town grew into a bustling port city. It played a pivotal role in South Africa's colonial history and the fight against apartheid, with landmarks like Robben Island symbolizing its past.
Getting to Cape Town
Several airlines fly into Cape Town, and it seems like the list of direct-flight options from the US is growing vastly! Coming from the United States, we flew into Newark (NYC) Airport, and took a direct flight from Newark to Cape Town on United Airlines. There are only three direct flights from the US to Cape Town as of now - United Airlines flies direct from Newark (EWR) and Dulles (IAD), and Delta flights direct from Atlanta (ATL). On our first visit, we upgraded to “Premium Economy” which in United Airline’s terms, is essentially one class before Business/First. With premium economy, we boarded the plane in the priority lane and early, and when we got to our seats we found United gave us a blanket, pillow, really nice noise-cancelling headphones, and a small toiletries kit filled with a toothbrush, tooth paste, lotion, socks, and hand sanitizer.
We departed Newark in the evening, and shortly after takeoff we were served dinner and drinks. Beer and wine was an included option for free (for every cabin on the plane). Throughout the flight we were offered drinks, water, and snacks like fruit, crackers, and cheese. Just before we landed in Cape Town the next morning, we were served a delicious breakfast! We opted for eggs and waffles, with fresh fruit and coffee. United Airlines offered several meal options for various diets. The flight from Newark to Cape Town is about 15 hours, so we figured it was well worth the upgrade at the airport (but not totally necessary for the budget travelers - we’ve taken this flight in Premium Economy and Standard Economy and enjoyed both!). Pro tip: Look into booking exit row or bulkhead seats if you are looking for a bit more leg room but don’t want to upgrade to Premium Economy or Business/First. We’ve been able to do this on a few flights to Cape Town for around $50-100 per person. The flight was smooth, and we loved the snacks, meals, drinks, and in-flight entertainment that was offered to us by United Airlines.
Once we landed in Cape Town, immigration was smooth and went quickly, and we were on our way to the Mother City before we knew it! There are various options for transportation - during our first visit, we hired a driver through our hotel, and arranged for a pickup at the airport following customs. We paid the hotel directly for the airport transfer, and it was about $40 USD one way. Hiring a driver through your accommodation is a great way to guarantee a ride to your hotel prior to landing, and we found the shuttle van we were picked up in to be very nice and spacious. It was comforting for us to book a driver through our accommodation, as they had a trusted team they had vetted. To get around town, we found Ubers to be readily available, extremely inexpensive (between $2-4 USD), and safe. After our first visit, we opted to use Uber and hired a driver through the app. From the airport to our accommodation we paid around $13 USD. We had great experiences using Uber’s ride share service, and felt very safe. Because of this, we tend to use their services more often when we visit, because it is so cost effective. We have not hired a car to self-drive around Cape Town yet, as we stayed nearby in walkable, or quick taxi ride areas. From brief research, it looks like you can hire a car to self-drive directly from CPT Airport for about $15/day, and the minimum age requirement to rent is 23.
Things to know before visiting Cape Town
Before packing your bags and hopping on your light, there are a few things to know that will ensure you have the best trip possible!
Depending on what country you are coming from, there may be vaccine requirements to enter. Check with your local authorities to get the most up-to-date information. Coming from the United States, we were not required to get any specific vaccinations for our travels to Cape Town. Since we were heading on Safari following our time in Cape Town, we did get a Typhoid vaccine, an up-to-date Tetanus shot, and took Anti-Malarial medication.
English is widely spoken. South Africa has 11 official languages: Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho sa Leboa (Northern Sotho), Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, and Xitsonga. English is extremely common and we didn’t have any issues communication throughout our visit.
Load-Shedding is real! This was a term we hadn’t heard of prior to our time in Cape Town. Load shedding in South Africa refers to the intentional, scheduled power outages, to prevent the entire electrical grid from collapsing when demand for electricity exceeds supply. Load shedding helps manage and balance the load on the grid, but it can disrupts daily life and businesses across the country. From our experience, many hotels and restaurants, especially in more touristic areas, have back-up generators and solar energy supply to be used during load shedding. For iPhone users, there’s an app called “ESP” that notifies you of load shedding in your area and can give an estimated time of when you can expect power to turn back on.
Cape Town experiences its windiest period from late October to March, with the strongest winds typically occurring in the summer months of December to February. The prevailing wind during this time is the Cape Doctor, a strong, cooling southeast wind that blows from the interior towards the ocean. It can reach speeds of up to 40-50 km/h (25-30 mph), especially in coastal areas like the V&A Waterfront and Camps Bay. The Cape Doctor is known for its refreshing effect on the hot summer temperatures but can be quite strong and gusty, so it's wise to plan outdoor activities accordingly.

Airbnb Rentals
Airbnb Rentals are a fantastic alternative to hotel stays in Cape Town. The city's tourism industry is well-developed, and Airbnb has become a favored option for both local and international travelers. Airbnbs in Cape Town offer unique and personalized accommodations, often in picturesque neighborhoods or close to major attractions like Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, and Cape Town's beaches. For long-term stays or travelers seeking a more "local" experience, Airbnb is often chosen over traditional hotels. The popularity of Airbnb has grown in recent years, making it a big part of Cape Town’s hospitality landscape. We’ve stayed in a few Airbnbs in both the V&A Waterfront area and Green Point Neighborhood, and had great experiences during both stays.

What we loved: The complex was fully gated, with 24/7 security. We felt so safe and comfortable here! The condo was large, and had a great kitchen, and the balcony overlooking the marina was the perfect place for watching sunset.
Location: Less than a 10 minute walk to the main attractions through the V&A Waterfront. Aside from the V&A Waterfront Hotel, you really can’t stay much closer. We absolutely loved the location here!
Amenities: This complex had a large gym, coffee shop, kayak storage, a parking garage with free parking, a large pool overlooking the marina, a washer and dryer, and more!
The Chelsea | Urban Retreat - Our Airbnb in the Green Point neighborhood, a 1 bedroom/1 bathroom condo in a gated complex, right next tons of bars and restaurants and DHL stadium.
with a fully equipped kitchen, free wifi, TV, backup generator for load shedding, and a stunning balcony that overlooks the marina.
What we loved: The complex was fully gated, and the 24/7 security staff were so attentive, helpful, and kind. We felt very safe here! The condo was newly renovated with high-end appliances and finishes, and was so clean! The host was responsive, and left chocolates, coffee, and champagne for us.
Location: Just steps from the main strip in Green Point with so many great cafes, restaurants, bakeries, and bars. This was our first time staying in Green Point, and we loved it! It felt more “local” than the V&A Waterfront area, and we enjoyed trying the different bakeries, dinners on the main strip, and grabbing groceries at the nearby market.

What to do in Cape Town
Take the Cable Car Up Table Mountain
No trip to Cape Town is complete without a ride up Table Mountain. The cable car offers jaw-dropping views as you ascend this iconic landmark. Once at the top, explore the hiking trails and take in the 360-degree panorama of the city, mountains, and sea. Pro tip: Go early in the morning to avoid long queues and unpredictable weather! We always try to visit on our first or second day of the trip, since the cable car may close due to inclement weather.
Stroll Through the V&A Waterfront
The V&A Waterfront is a bustling hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Take a leisurely stroll, browse local crafts, and grab a meal at one of the many restaurants with waterfront views. It's also a perfect spot to catch a sunset or hop on a boat tour. We took a helicopter tour from the V&A Waterfront, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a adventure. It was safe, so much fun, and we had incredible aerial views of Cape Town and the Twelve Apostles Mountain Range.
Indulge in Cape Town’s Culinary Delights
Cape Town is home to some of the best dining experiences in the world. Whether you're in the mood for fine dining or local comfort food, you'll find it here. One of my absolute favorites is The Butcher Shop & Grill at the V&A Waterfront. Known for its top-quality steaks and excellent service, it’s a meat lover’s dream.
For other dining experiences, here are three other must-visit restaurants:
The Test Kitchen: This world-renowned restaurant in Woodstock offers a mix of bold flavors and creative presentations. Be sure to book well in advance!
Kloof Street House: A magical spot with a Victorian ambiance and mouth-watering menu. Perfect for dinner with a cozy atmosphere.
Bistro Sixteen82: Located on the Steenberg Estate, this restaurant is famous for its tapas and beautiful vineyard views—ideal for a leisurely lunch.
No matter where you go, Cape Town’s culinary scene will not disappoint.
Visit Noordhoek Farm Village
For a more laid-back experience away from the hustle of the city, head to Noordhoek Farm Village. This charming village is located near the foot of Chapman's Peak Drive and is a perfect escape for foodies, families, and nature lovers alike.
The village offers a variety of restaurants, coffee shops, and artisanal stores. Enjoy a meal at The Foodbarn, where you can savor French-inspired dishes made from local ingredients. Afterward, explore the craft shops or relax in the beautiful surroundings while the kids enjoy the playground. Noordhoek Farm Village is also a gateway to nearby hiking trails and the scenic Long Beach, where you can soak up the natural beauty of Cape Town.
Relax at Camps Bay Beach
If you’re craving some sun and sand, head to Camps Bay Beach. With its pristine white sand and trendy beach bars, it’s the perfect place to unwind. Be sure to take a dip in the refreshing waters, and if you’re up for it, stick around for one of Cape Town’s famous sunsets.
Hike Lion’s Head
For the more adventurous travelers, a hike up Lion’s Head is a must. The trail is relatively short but offers some challenging sections and rewarding views. You’ll get a unique vantage point of the city, and if you time it right, a glorious sunrise or sunset.
Explore the Colorful Streets of Bo-Kaap
Bo-Kaap is a vibrant neighborhood known for its brightly painted houses and rich cultural heritage. Walk the cobblestone streets, visit the Bo-Kaap Museum, and sample some Cape Malay cuisine—try a traditional bobotie or koeksister! This area is perfect for Instagram shots and a deeper dive into Cape Town’s diverse history.
Day Trip to Cape Point
Venure beyond the city to Cape Point, located in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. The rugged coastline and breathtaking views make for a memorable day trip. Don’t forget to stop by the Cape Point lighthouse and keep an eye out for baboons!
Sample Local Wines in Stellenbosch
Just a short drive from Cape Town lies Stellenbosch, a beautiful wine region. Take a guided tour or explore on your own—either way, you’ll get to taste some of South Africa’s finest wines while enjoying the picturesque vineyards. This is a great addition to your Cape Town vacation itinerary for wine lovers. Just a few minutes away, the city of Franschhoek boasts the Franschhoek Wine Tram - a hop-on hop-off train that stops at several wineries within the Franschhoek valley. You will have the option to choose between five different routes on the tram, based on which wineries you’d like to visit. We took the Red Line and visited eight incredible wineries: Rickety Bridge, Grande Provence, Franschhoek Cellar, Eikehof, Lynx, Paserene, Haute Cabrière, and Le Lude. The tickets for the wine tram were about $17 USD per person, and included the tram and a welcome drink on the tram. The wineries offered specials for those visiting from the wine tram, and were a separate cost of around $4-6 per person per tasting. Franschhoek and Stellenbosch have incredible, award winning wine and we loved tasting the different varietals during our visit.
Discover Boulders Beach and Its Penguins
Last but certainly not least, head to Boulders Beach to meet the famous African penguins. These charming little creatures can be found waddling around the beach, and you can get up close to them on the boardwalk. This unique experience is sure to be a highlight of your trip! Once arriving in the parking lot, you’ll follow the walking path to the Boulder’s Beach park entrance. The tickets to go into the park are around $11 per person and can be purchased in-person or online in advance. The park offers a few different boardwalk pathways with several viewpoints of the penguins. So many spots for photo-ops! For the more adventurous travelers, follow the boardwalk entrance to Boulder’s Beach called “Foxy Beach”, where you’ll enter a much quieter spot and even have a chance to swim with the penguins! A few things to note if you choose to visit the penguins via Foxy Beach - the water is cold all year, but especially during the US summer months when it’s South Africa’s wintertime, you can get close to but cannot touch the penguins, and since the penguins can be inquisitive, they may try to get close to you if you have picnic or food items with you.

Final Travel Tips for Cape Town
Is Cape Town safe? Yes! But like any major city, it's important to stay alert and use common sense. Stick to well-populated areas, especially at night, and avoid displaying valuable items in public. We always put items like our phones in a cross-body bag. Cell phones tend to be the #1 thing stolen, especially for those who keep it in their back pocket.
Best time to visit: The summer months (November to March) are ideal for beach days and outdoor activities, while spring (September to November) is perfect for wildflower season and cooler hikes.
Getting around: We found that ride-hailing services are readily available and reliable, making it our favorite way to explore Cape Town and its surroundings. In USD, our Uber rides averaged about $2-4 per ride in the city.
Load shedding: Download the “ESP” app to view the most up-to-date load shedding outage information.
Power adapters: South Africa uses “Type M” power adapters. We purchased ours before our trip on Amazon and it worked well throughout our trip.
South African Cuisine: Cape Town has some of the best food in the world, and South African Cuisine is a must-try! We loved bobotie - a minced meat pie with egg baked on top, biltong - dried spiced meat (like jerky in the US), braai - South African barbecue, and Chakalaka & Pap - curried vegetable stew paired with cornmeal porridge. For a variety of local cuisine, visit the Oranjezicht City Farm Market located in the V&A Waterfront area.
Payments: We rarely carry cash around Cape Town, since most vendors take credit cards. We recommend carrying a very small amount of cash for tips or the one-off vendor that does not accept card, but plan to pay with your credit card for the majority of your trip.
Shopping: If you find yourself shopping and spend over R250 during your visit, you can get a 15% VAT refund at the airport before you go through security. The process can take some time depending on the amount of people in line, so plan accordingly at the airport.
Weather: The weather can change on a dime! Always bring a light layer- sweater, sweatshirt, etc. when heading out for the day. The winds can roll in quickly and drop temperatures just a quick.
Whether you’re taking in the scenic beauty, delving into the city’s history, or simply soaking up the local culture, Cape Town is bound to capture your heart.
Happy travels, and enjoy your first Cape Town adventure! If you’re anything like us, it won’t be your last Cape Town visit (the city makes it too hard not to fall in love with it)!
